Car key replacement is one of the most overpriced services at dealerships and one of the most underpriced (at first) services from scam locksmiths. Here's what it actually costs and why.
The Short Answer
For most vehicles, expect to pay $150 to $450 for a replacement key from a mobile locksmith. Dealerships charge $300 to $800+ for the same job. The range is wide because it depends heavily on the vehicle make and what type of key technology is involved.
Types of Car Keys and What They Cost
Basic Transponder Key (no fob, chip embedded in the key head)
Vehicles: older Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Ford, Chevy (pre-smart-key era, typically 2005-2015)
Mobile locksmith price: $150 - $250
This includes cutting the blade to your lock and programming the chip to your car's immobilizer. The dealership alternative runs $200 - $400 for the same thing, plus a tow if you have no working key.
Remote Head Key (transponder + buttons in one unit)
Vehicles: many domestic and Japanese vehicles 2008-2018
Mobile locksmith price: $175 - $325
Slightly more complex to source the correct key blank. Programming is similar to a basic transponder.
Proximity / Smart Key / Push-Button Start Fob
Vehicles: most vehicles 2015+, luxury brands 2010+
Mobile locksmith price: $250 - $475
These require more sophisticated programming equipment. BMW CAS/FEM, Mercedes Keyless-Go, Audi Advance Key, and similar systems require brand-specific tooling. Lexus Smart Access and Acura systems fall in this range too. Dealer prices for these run $500 - $900+.
High-Security Luxury Fobs (Porsche, Mercedes S-Class, Land Rover, BMW 7-series)
Mobile locksmith price: $350 - $600
These vehicles have additional immobilizer layers (Porsche PASE, Benz NTG security, Land Rover PATS). Not all mobile locksmiths can program these -- we can.
Tesla (Model 3, Y, S, X)
Tesla only programs keys via the Tesla app and a working key card or existing paired phone. No third-party locksmith can add a new key from scratch without Tesla's servers. If you're locked out of a Tesla with no working key, a locksmith can open the door -- but key programming requires Tesla Service. We're honest about this.

- Vehicle make: European luxury brands cost more due to tooling requirements
- Whether you have an existing working key: Programming is sometimes faster/cheaper with one working key present
- Time of day: Overnight calls may have a service fee added
- Location: NYC jobs take longer to reach and may run $20-40 higher than Westchester prices
